En 2O00, Peregrine Horden et Nicholas Purcell publient The Corrupting Sea, a Study of Mediterranean History (Wiley-Blackwell). Ils transforment l’analyse braudélienne de la Méditerranée en se focalisant sur les connexions qui forgent l’unité et l’identité de cet espace particulier. Ils lancent alors le courant (anglo-saxon) des New Mediterranean Studies, lequel s’est produit dans un mouvement plus général : celui du développement de la Global History.
Dans A Companion to Mediterranean History (WIley-Blackwell), les deux auteurs s’associent à d’autres spécialistes pour analyser l’histoire de la Méditerranée dans la très longue durée, et l’intégrer dans une perspective globale en la mettant en lien avec les autres espaces maritimes du monde à partir de la « première mondialisation ».
